A quorum being present, President Jere Morehead called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. Parliamentarian Usha Rodrigues provided remarks regarding the voting and debate procedures for the meeting to the Council.

As the first order of business, the president asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the September 28, 2022, meeting. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Stephen Harvey and was seconded by Matthew Auer. A vote was called, and the minutes were unanimously approved.

President Morehead then delivered his report to the Council:
  • The president began his report by highlighting significant achievements that occurred during the fall semester.
  • The Office of Undergraduate Admissions received more than 26,000 early action applications, up over 20 percent from last year. Early action decisions were released on Friday, November 18, and UGA is on-track for another record year in terms of total applications for admission.
  • Three UGA students, Aidan Leahy, Elijah Odunade, and Layla Parsa, won the Capital One College Bowl, a multi-week trivia competition. These students defeated Columbia University to clinch the victory on national television.
  • Natalie Navarrete, Foundation Fellow from Boca Raton, Florida, was named a 2023 Rhodes Scholar. Natalie’s achievement makes UGA one of only three public universities to have a Rhodes recipient this year and the only institution in the state of Georgia to do so.
  • Dr. Jenna Jambeck was named a 2022 MacArthur Fellow earlier this semester. This award, commonly known as the “Genius Grant,” is one of the most prestigious in the country and is presented to individuals who have dedicated their work to the benefit of society. Dr. Jambeck is only the second UGA faculty member to receive this award.
  • The UGA Archway Partnership has won prestigious awards recently. After winning the regional Kellogg Award in September, at the most recent APLU meeting in Denver Colorado, the group brought home the national C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award. The focus of this year’s award was the collaboration between the Archway Partnership and the city of Moultrie, Georgia. The president congratulated Vice President for Public Service and Outreach Dr. Jennifer Frum and Director of the Archway Partnership Dr. Michelle Elliott, along with their teams, for this achievement.
  • Dr. Tim Chester received the CIO of the Year ORBIE Award presented by Georgia CIO. This award recognizes chief information officers who have demonstrated excellence in technology leadership.
  • Regarding these significant achievements, the president stated that he sincerely appreciates the contributions that UGA faculty, staff, and students make to creating a world-class learning environment at the University of Georgia.
  • The fall graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies will be held in Stegman Coliseum on December 16.The undergraduate ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. Chris Womack, Chairman, President, and CEO of Georgia Power, will serve as the undergraduate commencement speaker. Dr. Alan Darvill, Regents Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Director Emeritus of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, will give the commencement address for the graduate ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
  • Before closing his remarks, the president thanked the members of Council for their work in service to UGA. At its last meeting, the Council approved the work of several committees that needed to be sent to the USG for final approval. The president stated he was pleased that after the tireless work of many, post-tenure policies were approved by the USG and that he accepted the resolutions passed by Council. The president thanked Dr. Barbara Biesecker and Dr. Elizabeth St. Pierre for their work in this process and for the significant time invested by them in this project. The president stated that Dr. Biesecker and Dr. St. Pierre, along with Associate Provost Elizabeth Weeks and Provost Hu, can help with any questions or concerns about these resolutions.
