As the first order of business, a motion was made to approve the minutes of the September 18, 2024, meeting. A vote was called, and the minutes were approved.

President Morehead then delivered his report to the Council:
  • The UGA School of Medicine continues to make significant progress. Prominent cancer researcher Yana Zavros is joining the School of Medicine as the inaugural Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Molecular Medicine. Dr. Zavros will recruit a cohort of additional faculty researchers and create a research center that will serve as the foundation for a translationally focused research enterprise in the School of Medicine.
  • Chris Rhodes, Director of Industry Partnerships and Project-based Learning in UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, will become the Executive Director of the Innovation District. He will begin his new role on November 1.
  • UGA continues to be recognized as a top university by U.S. News & World Report. The publication recently ranked UGA the 18th best public university in the nation, up two spots from last year and tied with the University of Washington and Purdue University. This marks the ninth consecutive year that UGA has placed in the top 20 of this well-recognized national ranking.
  • UGA has been named a recipient of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for the 11th consecutive year, reflecting extensive efforts to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for every member of the campus community.
  • The UGA School of Law was again named the best value in legal education by National Jurist, marking the fifth time in seven years that UGA has held the top spot in this ranking.
  • On October 4, a dedication ceremony for the $30M renovation of the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building, which is named for iconic alumni Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter-Gault, the first African American students to attend the University of Georgia, was held. The project blended modern materials with the historic building’s original features and restored the center courtyard. The President stated the university is grateful for the $15M grant from the Woodruff Foundation that accelerated this important renovation and the many contributions from alumni and industry partners who supported it. The dedication was a special moment for everyone in attendance.
  • Fall 2024 commencement speakers include the Honorable Lisa Godbey Wood, United States District Judge for the Southern District of Georgia, who will deliver the undergraduate commencement address, and Dr. John Maltese, Associate Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs and the Albert B. Saye Professor of American Government and Constitutional Law, who will deliver the graduate commencement address.
  • The President thanked everyone who participated in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, both on campus and in communities across the state. The President thanked the staff in the Office of Emergency Preparedness, the Division of Finance and Administration, Marketing and Communications, and so many others for the wonderful job each office performed in helping the university prepare for the hurricane and reopen quickly following the storm. The President commended the tremendous efforts of the faculty and staff at UGA’s Tifton campus, which suffered significant damage. They have done remarkable work reopening the campus and serving their stakeholders amid very challenging circumstances. The President also gave his special thanks to UGA Extension, 4-H centers, and so many others across the university who continue to serve constituents in South Georgia during this incredibly difficult time. The President expressed his gratitude to the UGA students who have participated in so many ways to help those in need.
  • Ethics Week will take place on campus November 4-8. Throughout the week, a series of events will highlight the university’s core values of integrity, excellence, accountability, and respect.
  • This concluded the President’s report.
The floor was then opened for the following reports: The following action items were presented to the Council for consideration: There being no old or new business, the meeting adjourned at 4:33 p.m.
