View Related Documents Online The University Council met on February 11, 2026, in the Tate Theater. A quorum being present, President Jere Morehead called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

Parliamentarian Randy Beck provided remarks on the procedures for voting and debate.

As the first order of business, a motion to approve the minutes of the November 19, 2025, meeting was made by Brian Seagraves and seconded by Joe Eustace. A vote was called, and the minutes were approved.

Before beginning his report, the President acknowledged the recent passing of UGA President Emeritus Michael Adams who passed away January 27 following a brief illness. During his 16-year tenure, Dr. Adams made a significant impact on the trajectory of the University, and the President stated he was grateful for his service and unwavering commitment to the University of Georgia’s mission. The President stated that the University’s thoughts and prayers continue to be with Dr. Adams’ wife Mary, his sons David and Taylor, and the entire family.

President Morehead then presented his report to the Council:
  • The President began his report by offering his deepest gratitude to all Council members for their efforts to ensure a successful fall semester and wished everyone a good start to the spring semester.
  • In light of the difficult winter weather challenges in recent weeks, the President thanked the many staff members in Finance and Administration, Student Affairs, Marketing and Communications, and other units who worked tirelessly to minimize disruptions and foster safe conditions across campus.
  • Last week, the President presented the annual State of the University Address to the campus community. The address focused on UGA’s relentless pursuit of excellence across all areas of its land-grant and sea-grant mission. Led by this mission, the University is experiencing tremendous momentum and has celebrated several recent achievements.
  • The UGA School of Medicine continues to make exceptional progress.Construction on the $100 million Medical Education and Research Building is on track for completion in December of this year. Additionally, last September, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education completed a two-day site visit evaluating the progress on several key indicators, including curriculum development, academic policies, and facilities. Dean Nuss expects to be notified by the LCME of its decision regarding preliminary accreditation status soon so that recruitment of the inaugural class of medical students can begin.
  • Last May, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents authorized the University to establish a School of Nursing, and in November, Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, a nationally recognized academic leader from Emory University, was announced as its founding dean. Dr. Clevenger began her new role on January 1. The President stated he appreciated her efforts to prepare the launch of the School of Nursing as early as fall 2027.
  • Together, the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing will expand the University’s impact and position UGA and our graduates at the forefront of improving health care outcomes across the state.
  • This year, UGA set another institutional record with more than 51,000 applications for admission, an increase of roughly 8 percent over last year. Just as encouraging are UGA’s student success outcomes. Over the past decade, the percentage of first-year students returning for their sophomore year has averaged nearly 95 percent. Additionally, 90 percent of students complete their degrees within six years, making UGA one of just nine public universities in the nation to reach this mark.
  • Beyond completion, UGA graduates continue to thrive after leaving campus. Career outcomes data for the Class of 2024 revealed that 95 percent of graduates are either employed or continuing their education within six months of earning their degrees.
  • Meanwhile, UGA’s total R&D expenditures once again reached an all-time high, totaling $654 million in FY25, a remarkable 75% increase since 2015. The University’s commitment to service across the state, advancing economic prosperity, strengthening communities, and connecting Georgians to the resources of the flagship land-grant institution, continues to pay dividends. It was recently reported that the University generated a record economic impact of $9.2 billion on the state of Georgia last year.
  • In 2025, UGA celebrated a Marshall Scholar, Truman Scholar, Knight Henessy Scholar, Udall Scholar, three Goldwater Scholars, three Schwarzmann Scholars, and seven Boren Scholars. UGA also was once again named a top producer of Fulbright U.S. students, marking the seventh time in the last 12 years UGA has earned that distinction.
  • The President extended his congratulations to UGA’s exceptional student-athletes for posting a record high GPA during the fall semester.
  • Construction of a new first-year residence hall and the West Campus Dining, Learning, and Well-being Center is scheduled to be completed later this year. At the same time, significant progress on the multi-phase modernization of the facilities on Science and Ag Hill is being made.
  • The President stated that these many accomplishments would be impossible without all of the University's faculty, staff, and students, and he thanked all in attendance at the meeting for their many contributions to this success.
  • The President also expressed his thanks to the Governor, the Georgia General Assembly, the Chancellor, and the Board of Regents for their steadfast support.
  • This concluded the President’s report.
The floor was then opened to the following reports: The following action items were presented to the Council for consideration. The following information item was submitted to the Council: There being no old or new business, the meeting adjourned at 4:04 p.m.
