The University Council Executive Committee met in a called meeting on February 6, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. in the Peabody Board Room of the Administration Building.  Susan Mattern-Parkes, Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:31 a.m.  Audrey Goodson from the Red and Black was the only visitor.

Dr. Mattern-Parkes distributed the following materials (attachment a).  A copy of the American Association of University Professors' policy on background investigations was also distributed.

Dr. Mattern-Parkes stated that she, as Chair of the Executive Committee; Shannon Scott, as President of Staff Council; and Dr. John Morrow, President of the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors were asked to prepare a response to a new Board of Regents policy requiring background checks on all new University System of Georgia employees.

Following discussion, a motion was made to form a committee to further investigate the policy and how it is currently being implemented within the University System of Georgia.  Quorum was called and found lacking.  Dr. Mattern-Parkes stated the committee was acting in an advisory capacity only without a quorum.  It was then decided that an endorsement by the signatures of fifty or more faculty members holding academic rank would be sought in order for the discussion of the policy to appear on the February 8 Council agenda.

It was brought to the attention of the committee that UGAMAIL is filtering important e-mails at the main server level creating problems for some faculty and this problem needs to be addressed.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:05 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Rebecca L. Macon
University Council Secretary
