As the first order of business, the minutes of the November 28, 2018 meeting were approved as distributed.

The President delivered the following report to the Council:
  • The President began his report to the Council by stating that the $1.2 billion goal for the Commit to Georgia Campaign has been surpassed sixteen months early. The campaign will continue through its official conclusion on June 30, 2020. Additionally, donors have established 370 Georgia Commitment need-based scholarships. Eighty-seven newly-endowed faculty chairs and professorships have also been established, and the campaign has supported ten capital projects.
  • In the fall, the President notified Council that the University had for the sixth consecutive year enrolled the most academically qualified class of first-year students in its history. It appears that the University is poised to meet or surpass this record again. The University has received 29,300 applicants for fall 2019. Offers of admission will be extended in March for the remaining students in the applicant pool. An intensive effort will begin to recruit for the University. Vice Provost Dr. Michelle Cook and Assistant to the President Arthur Tripp will be leading a group of students on the Road Dawgs initiative throughout the state during Spring Break to recruit underrepresented students to UGA.
  • A new record has been set for acceptances in the Fulbright U.S. student program with 16 current students and recent graduates participating in the 2018-2019 program. The University tied for 16th on the student list along with Stanford University, University of Virginia, University of Texas at Austin, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Villanova University.
  • The University's retention rate stands at 96% and the four and six year completion rates remain at record highs.
  • The President congratulated students who participated in UGA Miracle on February 23 and 24. This year, students raised more than $1 million to benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. This is the fourth consecutive year that the total raised has surpassed $1 million, and a record 2,200 students were involved in the initiative. The President expressed congratulations to the students and to Vice President for Student Affairs Victor Wilson.
  • Construction is underway for phase one of the interdisciplinary STEM research facility. UGA is seeking funding from the state for phase two of the project. The President stated he has been spending time in Atlanta making the case for this funding as well as funding for faculty and staff raises and the full funding formula for the USG. The President is also making the case to the General Assembly for funding for other small capital projects.
  • The University's research enterprise continues to perform well. The University earned the number one spot this year with more than 50 products based on faculty research reaching the marketplace.
  • Four finalists were recently hosted on campus for interviews for the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost position. The President stated he is working diligently to finalize a decision on this position very soon. The President expressed his gratitude to Dr. Libby Morris for her leadership in serving in the role of Interim Provost during this time.
  • In this year's State of the University address, the President discussed the University's new Innovation District. This initiative is underway to create a hub for university start-ups and research commercialization. The goal is to have the master plan for the district available by the fall.
  • The President also announced in the State of the University address the new strategic planning process which will involve several deans and faculty members and be coordinated by Vice Provost Dr. Michelle Cook and Dr. Kyle Tschepikow of the Office of the President. Input is actively being sought from the campus community on this process.
  • This concluded the President's report to the Council.
The floor was then opened for the following reports: The following action items were presented to the Council for consideration: There being no old or new business, the meeting adjourned at 4:12 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
