As the first order of business, a motion was made by Jeff Netter and seconded by Stuart Ivy to approve the minutes of the March 20, 2024, meeting. A vote was called, and the minutes were approved.

President Morehead then delivered his report to the Council:
  • The President began his report by informing the Council that Dean Donald Leo of the College of Engineering has been named Executive Vice President and Provost at Ohio University. The President thanked Dean Leo for his leadership and service and congratulated him on this exciting opportunity.
  • The state budget for FY 2025 included a 4% cost of living adjustment. These raises, which are capped at $3,000, will be extremely helpful for faculty and staff, and the President stated the university will continue to advocate for further salary increases at every opportunity to address the competitive labor market.
    • UGA’s share of last year’s budget reduction of over $19 million was fully restored in the FY 25 budget.
    • Several capital projects were funded, including continued work on the Science and Ag Hill Modernization project.
    • In the amended FY24 budget, the university received $50 million from the state for a new facility for the UGA School of Medicine, and the university is now raising private funds to match the state’s investment.
  • The groundbreaking for the new Medical School Building took place last Friday on the Health Sciences Campus, with many state leaders, donors, medical partnership students, and others on hand to celebrate.
  • On March 26, the University of Georgia’s annual giving day, Dawg Day of Giving, set a single-day record for the third year in a row with over 11,700 donations totaling $13.8 million. The generous support from our alumni and friends resulted in donations for each of our 19 colleges and schools, including the new School of Medicine.
  • Honors week was celebrated the first week of April, and many faculty, staff, students, and alumni were honored for their work.
  • On April 8th, the 25th anniversary of the CURO Symposium was celebrated, where over 600 undergraduates presented their research in collaboration with nearly 280 faculty members.
  • Two UGA juniors, Lainey Gammon and Sara Logsdon, have earned the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. This is the highest award of its type for the fields of mathematics, engineering, and natural sciences.
  • The incoming class of fall 2024 students is shaping up well as the May commitment deadlines near. All signs point to another incredible incoming class, and the President stated that the university looks forward to these extremely accomplished scholars joining the campus community this fall.
  • Reading Day is next week, and then finals and Spring Commencement will occur.
  • Commencement exercises will begin at Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday, May 9, for those earning graduate degrees. Master’s and specialist degrees will be awarded at 10:00 a.m. and doctoral degrees will be awarded at 2:00 p.m. The undergraduate ceremony will take place on Friday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Sanford Stadium.
  • Dr. Jenna Jambeck, Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering and 2024 SEC Professor of the Year, will deliver the graduate commencement address. Allison Schmitt, one of the most decorated American athletes of all time and a University of Georgia alumna, will serve as the undergraduate speaker.
  • Before closing, the President expressed his gratitude for the collective effort of so many participating in the meeting, especially those serving in leadership roles on the Council.
