The University Council met on September 27, 2012 in the Tate Theatre in the Tate Student Center. President Adams called the meeting to order at 3:35 pm. The President opened the first meeting of the University Council for the 2012-2013 term by thanking Dr. Nelson Hilton, the new chair of the Executive Committee, and Dr. Chuck Gruner, Parliamentarian, for their service to the Council. He also thanked Registrar and Council Secretary Dr. Jan Hathcote for her work on behalf of the Council.

The minutes of the April 26, 2012 meeting were then approved as distributed.

The President's report to the Council included the following remarks:

  • President Adams welcomed the new dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Alan Dorsey, and the founding dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Dale Threadgill.
  • The President requested that the Registrar place the Annual Ombudsperson Report in the minutes of the meeting.
  • The President informed the Council that the University of Georgia Foundation Trustees are on campus through Friday, September 28. The group represents the largest funding entity for the university.
  • The Board of Regents will hold its monthly meeting at the UGA campus on October 9th and 10th. The main portions of the meeting will be held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. This meeting will constitute the first time the Board of Regents has met at UGA since 2003.
  • On October 11, the annual Campaign for Charities will have its kickoff with a breakfast held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The President is hopeful that the university will meet its goal of raising $450,000 through the campaign.
  • The President alerted the Council to several national ratings related to the university. Among the ratings were UGA's inclusion, for the first time, in the list of the top 12 public ivy universities and in the Shanghai Institute's ranking of the top 200 research universities. Smart Money Magazine has also listed the university as the fourth best return on tuition in the country.
  • The President also provided the Council with a brief presentation on the university's budget.
  • Having concluded his remarks, the President opened the floor to reports from the University Council Standing Committees.

The floor was opened for the following reports:
