The University Council met on March 21, 2013 in the Tate Student Center's Tate Theater. Provost Jere Morehead called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

The minutes of the February 21, 2013 meeting were approved as distributed.

The President's report to the Council included the following remarks:

  • Provost Morehead began the meeting by acknowledging that he was substituting for President Michael Adams, who was visiting UGA Study Abroad sites in Cortona and Oxford.
  • The Provost provided updates to the Council on the various searches being conducted by the University to fill several dean positions as well as the position of Vice President for Student Affairs. Dr. Charles Davis from the University of Missouri has been named the new dean of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The College of Engineering's dean search is underway, with three finalists selected to visit the campus. The first finalist from Virginia Tech has already visited UGA, while the remaining two finalists, who are from the University of Florida and the University of Washington, will visit the campus next week. The School of Public and International Affairs dean search committee has selected its finalists for campus visits. The three finalists come from the University of Texas at Austin, Indiana University Bloomington, and Southern Methodist University. The search for the new dean for the Terry College of Business is underway as well. The search committee for this dean is being chaired by Dean Alan Dorsey. As of now, no finalists have been selected for campus visits, but selections should be made by the end of April. Lastly, the search for a new Vice President for Student Affairs has commenced. Dr. Jennifer Frum has been named chair of the search committee. Finalists are hoped to be named for the position in late Spring or early Summer.
  • The Provost also provided an update on the presidential transition process at the University. The Provost expressed his thanks to the twelve members who are serving on the Presidential Transition Committee. They are working to ensure a seamless transition on July 1.
  • The Provost stated that he has had numerous meetings with Governor Deal's office staff, state legislators, and several state officers, including the Commissioner of Agriculture. Last week, the Provost was in Washington, D.C. where he met with both Georgia senators and several congressmen, as well as taking the freshman class of Foundation Fellows to meet the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
  • Following the Council meeting, the Provost stated that he would be attending the annual Academic Affairs Symposium sponsored by the Teaching Academy.
  • Entrepreneurial Week will be held March 22-29. This is a new initiative for the University meant to inspire students, faculty, alumni, and community members who have contemplated making the plunge into entrepreneurship. Highlights of the week include a TedxUGA Conference on March 22 as well as economic development activities that will be going on throughout the week. The Provost acknowledged Vice President for Research David Lee's work on this initiative.
  • Honors Week is coming up April 15-19. The Faculty Recognition Banquet and the Public Service and Outreach Meeting and Awards Luncheon will both be held Monday, April 15. The Presidential Honors Day Luncheon will occur on Wednesday, April 17. The Creative Research Awards Banquet will take place Thursday evening, April 18. Lastly, the Alumni Awards Luncheon will be held on Friday, April 19.
  • The Provost reminded Council members that Spring Commencement is coming up on May 10. The Graduate Ceremony will occur at Stegeman Coliseum at 10:00 a.m., and the Undergraduate Ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Sanford Stadium. This concluded the President's Report presented by the Provost.
