The University Council met on April 26, 2017 for its final meeting of the 2016-2017 academic year. A quorum being present, President Morehead called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

As the first item of business, the minutes of the March 22, 2017 meeting were approved as distributed.

President Morehead then delivered the following report to the Council:

  • The President began his report by stating that earlier in the day the University awarded twelve faculty teams research awards through the Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program. The President thanked David Lee, Vice President for Research, and Jennifer Frum, Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, and the teams that they assembled for reviewing the proposals that were submitted from more than 150 faculty teams.
  • Last week, the President convened two sessions of conversations among University representatives, Athens city officials, and other local leaders regarding challenges facing the local area in terms of economic development and education. These sessions were facilitated by the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development. The President stated that these initial discussions were very productive and enabled the identification of new ways to enhance existing partnerships between the University and the local community. More targeted conversations will be held in the future. This initiative will continue to be led by community relations coordinator Alison McCullick.
  • Third-year Honors students Morgan Gibbs and Mallory Harris have been named 2017 Goldwater Scholars. Third-year Honors and Foundation Fellows students Shreya Ganeshan and Elizabeth Wilkes have been named 2017 Udall Scholars.
  • A record number of twenty UGA students and alumni have been awarded National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships.
  • For the first time in its history, UGA has been designated as one of the top producers of Fulbright scholars in the country. This academic year there were fifteen Fulbright students and six Fulbright scholars from UGA.
  • The annual CURO (Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities) Symposium was held earlier this month. More than 550 undergraduate students participated in the symposium. This marked the first year that non-Honors students made up the majority of the undergraduate research presenters at the symposium.
  • The 76th annual Peabody Awards will be held next month in New York City. This year, for the first time ever, the Peabody Awards will be tapped for a television special to air on both PBS and FUSION networks on Friday, June 2. The President congratulated Peabody Executive Director Jeffrey Jones and Dean Charles Davis on this important achievement.
  • The annual Candlelight memorial service to remember those students, faculty, and staff who have passed away since last April will be held on Thursday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. on the steps of the Chapel.
  • Commencement will be held on Friday, May 5. Ernie Johnson, Jr. will be the commencement speaker at the undergraduate ceremony held at 7:00 p.m. in Sanford Stadium. Dr. Marshall Shepherd will be the commencement speaker for the graduate ceremony held at 10:00 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum.
  • Before closing his report, the President thanked Council members for their service this year and also thanked those who served in leadership roles for the Council. The President stated that he wanted the record to reflect the University's appreciation to all standing committee chairs; to Ms. Rosemary Segreti, for her service beginning in January as Interim Registrar and Council Secretary; to Professor Usha Rodrigues for her service as Council Parliamentarian; and to Dr. Janet Frick for serving as Chair of the Executive Committee.
  • This concluded the President's report to the Council.

The floor was then opened for the following standing committee reports and minutes. Standing committee minutes and reports submitted prior to the meeting are also included below:

The following Action Items were presented to the Council for consideration:

There being no further old or new business, the Council adjourned for the 2016-2017 academic year at 4:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Rosemary Segreti, Interim Registrar
Secretary to University Council
